Jennette McCurdy addresses Ariana Grande feud

E! News caught up with Sam & Cat’s Jennette McCurdy, star of the upcoming Netflix series Between. McCurdy was reportedly at odds with former Nickelodeon co-star Ariana Grande before their show was axed, but she cleared the air on her status with the singer. And in case any of you guys were hoping for a juicy feud—sorry!

“I just feel that, you know Ariana and I were and are extremely close and very like-minded in a lot of different ways and then, sorta as the show dissolved, everybody wanted to find some sort of hidden meaning in our relationship,” McCurdy tells us (see more Tuesday on E! News).
“Some like drama and I think we butted heads at times but in a very sisterly way. She knows me so well and I know her so well that I think it was unfortunate that things kind of got misconstrued.”

Jennette continued to explain that working long hours beside Grande for those years created a friendship that cannot be penetrated.

“There is certainly like a friend dynamic but then once you’re around that person for—I mean, Carly, Sam & Cat—once we didn’t have child labor laws we could work like 16 hours a day so you are around these people constantly and It’s just natural that you’re gonna have ups and downs,” she says.
“But you bond so much and you’re so close that you can’t go through that experience and…I can’t imagine a world where you would not come out extreme friends. I mean I have bonds with both Miranda Cosgrove and Ariana that are impenetrable.”

Shortly after Nickelodeon canceled Sam & Cat, McCurdy addressed many issues via reddit. “I am not a role model. I don’t claim to be, I don’t try to be, and I don’t want to be. There was a time when I tried to live up to the aggrandizing title, that pedestal of a thing. Maybe it wasn’t so much that I was trying to live up to it,” she wrote. “Perhaps I thought I could and I thought I was supposed to, so I gave it my best shot.”
McCurdy said she can “admit” it now. “Back in my adolescence, I was more amiable, bubbly, and on lightly humid days, maybe even flouncy,” the 22-year-old vented. “I was role model material and then some.”

UPDATE: Jennette McCurdy had another interview with People Now about how the two are still hanging out together. In fact, they both had coffee together before Ariana went on tour!

Sam & Cat is officially cancelled

After being put on a “permanent hiatus” in April following some behind-the-scene drama, Nickelodeon hit comedy series Sam & Cat has been being officially cancelled, with promos for the last produced episode, No. 36, #GettingWiggy, calling it a series finale. “Nickelodeon will not be producing more episodes of Sam & Cat,” the network said in a statement. “We are very proud of the show and its very talented cast and we wish them all the best.”

[spoiler intro=”” spoiler title=”Ariana Grande’s message about the show”]

So the news is out about Sam & Cat. I felt it wasn’t my place to make any sort of announcement so I kept quiet until now. I want to thank Nickelodeon for making a childhood dream of mine come true, for being a family to me, for being so accommodating and supportive of my multitasking with my music career, and for of course introducing me to many of my fans however many years ago. I want to thank Dan Schneider (@DanWarp) for allowing me to play such a special, beautiful character who I hid behind for so long. What I mean by that is when I was younger, people loved Cat so much I used to pretend to be more like her. It took me a long time to be brave enough to separate myself and show people how different we actually are…. I think that’s honestly because I admire her so much. Her appreciation for life and everybody she encounters. Her passion and genuine excitement for the little things that most people dread like school projects and work. She always saw negative obstacles as opportunities to make things good.
I will always hold Cat near and dear to my heart and appreciate her help in my personal growth from teenager to adult. I know she seems like a simple, daft character (and she is) but she played such a huge part in my life I just wanted to express my appreciation for her and share some of the things I love most about her. I think a lot of people could take a page out of her book…… she wouldn’t judge anybody by their appearance…. she believed the best in people…. she wasn’t afraid of anything or anybody…. she never let people’s judgements hold her back from doing what she wanted, acting how she wanted, dressing how she wanted wanted, dying her hair however she wanted… she never held back her enthusiasm or joy for fear of appearing some sort of way or for fear of jinxing the good that is real (which is something I personally do all the time but I wish I could shake that and celebrate every little thing like she does).

One of my favorite things about Cat was that she never lost her sense of wonder. As we grow up we become more and more jaded and fearful of how we come across. We hold back a little more, protect ourselves a little more and although Cat goes through the same ridicule as anybody else does growing up, she never changed or lost her childlike wonder. To me that’s the bravest, most special thing about her. She actually reminds me a lot of Frankie in that way.
So I know a lot of people will think this is a lot for some ‘dumb’ kids show character…. but to me she is actually a lot smarter, stronger and braver than all the rest of us.

Hopefully we’ll find out one day if Cat & Robbie ever got married. If I had any say in the story from here on out I’d make sure they were happily married with sweet, eccentric, Jewish, artificially red headed babies. Cat would constantly find herself reminding Aunt Sam to leave the butter sock and other dangerous weapons out of the house. They’d live down the street from Jade and Beck, also happily married with purple and black haired, pale, grungy, beautiful, goth babies. 🙂

Thank you to the cast and crew who I spent almost every day with for a good 4 or 5 years. Thanks for lighting us beautifully, shooting us beautifully, making the most incredible props, yelling at us when we were running late to set, keeping us on track and most of all for making it such a positive work environment. The guys behind the scenes couldn’t have been more pleasant or hard working and I appreciate them for that so much. I can’t imagine that there is a more pleasant or professional crew in Hollywood.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart to a true friend of mine, Dan Schneider. I will never take these memories or lessons learned for granted.

Lastly, thank you to my fans who have been with me since all of this started… you are the most loyal, dedicated and continuously loving supporters I could ever imagine. We’ve been through so much and you are still here… and we’ve got a long way to go. 🙂
Thank you for believing in me, accepting me and loving me. I love you forever.

Sam & Cat had been a runaway success by any measure. The series, from proven hitmaker Dan Schneider, brought together two popular characters from two popular Nick series – iCarly’s Sam Puckett and Victorious‘ Cat Valentine — played by two of the network’s best-known stars and best friends, Jennette McCurdy and Ariana Grande, respectively. The series has been a ratings hit, quickly becoming Nickelodeon’s highest-rated series. Last July, only a month into Sam & Cat’s run, Nick doubled its freshman order from 20 to 40 episodes. Its hourlong Jan. 18 episode drew 4.8 million total viewers.

But as production went on for Sam & Cat‘s 40-episode first season, rumors started circulating about discord on the set, with emotions running high and McCurdy and Grande sometimes showing up late. The grueling, 40-episode shoot had been taxing on everyone. Additionally, McCurdy had been going through a difficult time in her personal life for the past six months and recently had to deal with the leak of racy photos, while Grande’s music career has taken off big time. Both have been at Nickelodeon for a long time, McCurdy for more than seven years and Grande for more than four. Both are entering adulthood, and word is both were feeling constrained at kids-focused Nickelodeon and are ready to move on.

Things came to a head in late March when McCurdy publicly accused Nickelodeon of unfair treatment. She also fueled speculation about a rift with her longtime best friend Grande by un-following Grande on social media and not joining her co-star at Nickelodeon’s Kids Choice Awards. A few days later, production on the series was shut down with four episodes from Season 1 left to shoot. They will not be filmed, and there will not be a second season either. Meanwhile, Nick is in production on the new comedy series from Schneider, the 20-episode Henry Danger.

Cat drops of the package off at their door and Nona drops the baby next to the package and goes to get something she forgot for the baby and Cat has to pee. The drone then comes and mistakenly picks up the baby carriage instead of the package. Nona comes out and sees the carriage gone and looks up at the sky and sees the drone taking away the baby and she screams. Cat and Nona are calling the drone company about the drone picking up the baby while Sam is calling Tubba Chicken for spicy chicken. Sam, Cat, and Nona decide to go to the drone company and get the baby. At the company, they ask the same guy that was in their apartment about the baby and he reveals the drones mistakenly pick up the wrong things all the time, like babies, pets, and snakes, and wigs. They go to a room where the keep all the items mistakenly carried by the drones. Then Sam & Cat don’t remember which baby is the baby they were babysitting because there is at least 7 babies. Nona then comes up with an idea that the baby laughed when she fell down and that’s how they can find out which one is the right baby. Sam pushes Nona down and one of the babies laughs and they pick up that baby. Then Sam & Cat start to leave while Nona is still on the ground. One of the drones picks up Nona’s hair and rips it off her head. Sam & Cat laugh at Nona’s bald head. And the three go back home to eat chicken from Tubba Chicken. [/toggle] [toggle title=”FACTS”]

Sam & Cat: #StuckInABox

Sam walks in on Cat riding her bike, which was hanging from the ceiling. Cat explains that she had a guy named Chico attach her bike to the ceiling. Sam then shows Cat that she had gotten them free tickets to Mystic Mountain and she hit them because Mystic Mountain was trying to fix their rides and they needed people to ride them and see if the rides were safe, so Sam had got them tickets so that they’d be able to go on the rides without waiting. Then, Dice comes in with Goomer, who was holding a magic box. The magic box was supposed to make anyone inside it disappear. He wants to demonstrate, but Sam doesn’t want to be his assistant. Goomer offers to be the assistant, but he’s too big to enter. Cat ends up being the assistant. However, when Dice pulls the lever that would open the box to reveal that Cat is gone, it won’t open. Goomer tries to open it, but he ends up pulling off the entire lever; Cat was trapped in the box.

[toggle title=”MORE INFO:”]

Sam and Dice can’t get the box open. Cat is panicking because she wanted to go to Mystic Mountain. Sam, Dice, Goomer, and Cat go to Bots so that Sam can get some ideas and Cat can have some fries that will go through a hole in the box. Goomer asks Tandy if he can shoot a laser and open the box. However, the laser ricochets off the box and hits Goomer’s hamburger. Goomer throws the flaming burger onto another table and Tandy makes a run for it. That night, Cat has to sleep on her bed in the box. Cat won’t stop talking about how she’s been going to Hollywood Arts High School for years and she still can’t figure out whether she wants to be a singer or an actress. Sam leaves, right before Cat starts singing a rendition of “Beautiful Dreamer.”

Cat has some orange juice and a raw egg for breakfast that morning and Sam has a bunch of pancakes and bacon. Dice and Goomer come in where Goomer sticks a drawing of Cat on the box. Dice then explains that he got the magic box from a magic store that was run by a mean guy named Vance Anderson. He’s the only guy in L.A. who would be able to open the box, but Vance was always calling Dice a terrible magician. Sam, Cat, Dice, and Goomer go to the magic store, where Vance immediately falls for Sam. This annoys Sam. Vance tells Dice that all he needed to do to get the box open was hit a button on the box. However, when Dice hits the button, it doesn’t work. Sam takes Vance outside after he continues flirting with her and then starts to hurt him. Dice and Goomer see what they think is blood on the floor. Sam comes back and says that she had knocked over his can of red paint. Sam, Dice, and Goomer bring Cat to Mystic Mountain while she was still in the box, but then, they hit a speed bump and the box falls out of the car.

Sam & Cat: #FresnoGirl

Sam obtains a gun that launches hot dogs while Cat makes Fudge Piles to prepare for babysitting a girl named Kim. This dessert is so chewy that it causes people’s mouths to get stuck, including Dice’s. Once Kim shows up, she makes an agreement that Sam and Cat will buy her a Fresno Girl doll if she excels on her math test. When this happens, Sam and Cat end up paying $340 at a snooty outlet that upsells them on “accessories.” Meanwhile Goomer puts up signs to help find a missing shirt that gives him luck for MMA fights. The signs are misunderstood and Randy’s scout troop believes a trip to Hawaii is the reward for finding Goomer himself. Later, Sam accidentally hits Kim’s doll with a hot dog and damages it, so they must return to the store that upsells them yet again. Sam gets revenge by offering Fudge Piles to the employees, then telling shoppers that all merchandise is free since the salespeople cannot talk. Finally it’s revealed that Kim lied about her math test and did not pass after all; Goomer has also been abducted by Randy’s scout troop. Kim agrees to a date with Randy in exchange for Goomer’s return and to absolve the deception about her math score. It also turns out Goomer was wearing his lucky shirt, backwards, the entire time.

Cat is making a tray of “fudge piles.” Then, Sam comes home with a wiener shooter, which shoots wieners. Then, Goomer runs in, looking for “Timmy Tee.” Dice follows and he explains that Goomer has a lucky shirt which he named “Timmy Tee” but he had lost it. Dice eats a fudge pile, but they stick to his jaws and he can’t speak. A girl named Kim, who Sam and Cat babysit, comes in and is depressed because if she fails another math test, she’ll have to go to summer school. Sam and Cat ask her what she really wants. Kim says she wants a Fresno Girl doll, so Sam and Cat say that if Kim gets a B+ or above on her test, they’ll get her a Fresno Girl. Meanwhile, Dice sticks a fork in his mouth and Goomer tries to pull out the fork. He pulls out the fork, along with the fudge pile… and two of Dice’s teeth.

Goomer leaves flyers all over Bots so that people would know his T-shirt is missing. However, he never said that the shirt was Timmy Tee, making it seem like Goomer’s name was Timmy Tee. This makes Randy and his friends think Goomer is Timmy Tee, but they’d never given him his shirt. Randy and his friends end up hunting down Goomer. Meanwhile, Kim had gotten an A- (92%) on the test, so Sam and Cat take her to the store. Kim chooses a doll named Gabriella, but the doll’s price was ridiculously high. If they bought Gabriella half and naked, it would still be $156.20 because hair and clothes counted as accessories. Hair, clothes, and a bike cost over $100, and Sam and Cat end up losing almost all their money.

Sam is furious about how they had lost about $300. Goomer couldn’t hide in his house because they’d found out where he lives. Sam and Cat tell Goomer to lie on the floor of their bedroom facedown. Then, Sam accidentally shoots a wiener at Gabriella, knocking off her leg. Meanwhile, Randy and his friends find Goomer and kidnap him. The cost to repair Gabriella’s leg costs another $200, infuriating Sam. Sam then decides to give all the employees fudge piles, sticking their jaws together. Then, Sam announces on the speaker that all Fresno Girl dolls were free. While all the customers start grabbing everything, Sam, Cat, and Kim make their getaway. When they get home, Sam and Cat sees Kim’s test and see a 67% on it instead of the 92% Cat had seen earlier. Kim finally admits that she had made a fake test with a 92% score. Sam and Cat aren’t happy, but then, Randy comes and once again asks for his reward. However, Randy says that it’s his birthday soon and if they get him a date, he’ll release Goomer. Sam and Cat blackmail Kim into doing it. Goomer is released, but he still doesn’t have his shirt. However, it turns out that Goomer had been wearing his shirt all week; he had just been wearing it backwards.

Sam, Cat, Dice, and Nona go to a kid named Otis’ birthday party at Bots. However, they are the only ones at the party who weren’t playing this addicting game called Brain Crush. No one could even look up or hear anything because of how absorbed they were to the game. Not even the birthday cake could help the kids look up. Sam ends up stealing the birthday cake.

The next day, Sam is trying to fix the door after she had kicked it in recently. They plan to have Nona do their laundry for them. They then find out that Dice got addicted to Brain Crush, too. Sam and Cat are angry about this. When Sam goes back to fix the door, Cat sees that Dice’s battery is low. On his hurry to get to his phone charger, he accidentally closes the door on Sam’s fingers. Cat then puts too much bandages on her hands. When they get to Elderly Acres, everyone is playing Brain Crush. Cat slaps Nona to get her to snap out of it. This doesn’t work and everyone continues playing and moaning like zombies. Sam and Cat run for it and tell a cop. However, he was obsessed, too.

Cat was doing a one-woman show called “Baberaham Lincoln,” the story of what would happen if Abraham Lincoln was a girl. The night of the show, Dice and Nona are still obsessively playing Brain Crush. Cat steals Dice’s phone and Nona’s Pear Pad and runs for it. At the show, everyone in the audience is playing Brain Crush. No one listens to her show and someone tells Cat to shut up while they play Brain Crush, so Cat ends up going backstage, crying. Sam is the only one in the audience not obsessively playing Brain Crush, so she goes and comforts Cat. She then gets an idea. She hires the karate team to break everyone’s devices and this works. Back at home, Dice and Nona are angry at themselves for getting addicted to Brain Crush, so they turn on Toilet Wars with Sam and Cat.
