Harvey Fierstein on working with Ariana Grande in Hairspray Live!

On December 6th, Harvey Fierstein talked with Gay Times Magazine on working with Ariana Grande and donning the heels again for Hairspray Live.

Creator of the musical and starring as Edna Turnblad — mother of Tracy — in the NBC live broadcast, Harvey has moved from writing the story on page, to starring on Broadway, and now a live television show.

In the current issue of GT, we sat down with the King of gay theatre to find out how he prepares to bring Edna back to live once again.

“It’s more scary than exciting,” he giggles.

“I mean, it’s live television and I’ve never done that before. At my age, to take on something like this is HUGE! Holding together a performance during commercial breaks? I just don’t know about that. I guess I didn’t say ‘no’ because life is only as exciting as the times you say ‘yes’, right?”

But how has the lengthy rehearsal process with his American Music Award-winning co-star Ariana Grande been so far?

“She’s huge, but the whole cast is flipping awesome,” he smiles.

“We did some press which is when I properly met Ariana; she’s such a doll-and-a-half. We giggled and we laughed! We sat down to do a table reading, she sat next to me, and when she sang she blew me out of my chair — WOW! When it came to my time to sing, I said calmly, ‘You can all go for coffee now!’”

Ariana Grande talks going country with Entertainment Tonight

On September 26th, an interview of Ariana and Elvis Duran was posted for Entertainment Tonight as the 23-year-old pop star appeared to have Nashville on the brain at the iHeartRadio Fest in Las Vegas over the weekend, opening up to Elvis of New York’s Z100 Morning Show about her career ambitions.

“My grandpa, he always wanted me to do something in the country world. I don’t know if that would ever happen,” she said, “[but] if that opportunity comes along, I’d have to say, ‘Hell yeah!'”

“My grandpa was like, ‘You need to do a country song,'” she continued. “So, [I] gotta make that happen someday.”

Grande said she grew up listening to the Dixie Chicks with her dad, “so that’s the most country I’ve been exposed to.”

For now, Grande is gearing up for her Dangerous Woman tour and a supporting role in NBC’s Hairspray Live! in December.

“I love, love, love, love pop music and I love what I do, and I’m very grateful to be able to do it, but my soul misses theater so much,” the former Broadway star told ET. “I’m so excited about Hairspray, I have no words. Like, I love it so much. I love being able to be a part of something that, A.) is a musical and B.) also makes people feel good.”

In a separate interview with ET last week, Grande had praised the musical’s “strong message.”

“With everything that’s going on in the world — the intolerance, the ignorance, the hate and ridiculousness — it’s just so crazy how this takes place in the ’60s and, like, we’re still working on all that. It’s playful, but also very necessary,” she said.

Ariana Grande to play the role of Penny in Hairspray Live!

Ariana Grande is now a checkerboard chick. On July 7th, the Grammy-winning singer-actress has joined the cast of NBC’s Hairspray Live!, she announced on Twitter, and will play the role of Penny Pingleton.

“Penny has been a dream role since Hairspray opened on Broadway,” tweeted Grande of playing Tracy Turnblad’s incorrigible best friend, a role played by Leslie Ann Powers and Amanda Bynes in the 1988 and 2007 films, respectively.

To Kerry Butler, who also originated the Broadway role in the 2002 production, she said, “Hope to make you proud.”

Grande joins a star-studded cast, including Martin Short, Derek Hough, Harvey Fierstein, Kristin Chenoweth and Jennifer Hudson. Known widely onscreen for her Nickelodeon roles, she first made her Broadway debut in the musical 13.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to round out our all-star ‘Hairspray Live!’ cast with Ariana Grande, one of the biggest recording artists in the world,” said Robert Greenblatt, Chairman, NBC Entertainment. “She’s also a Broadway baby at heart, having debuted on Broadway when she was 15, and will be fantastic in the delightful role of Penny Pingleton. We look forward to her millions of fans seeing yet another side to this multifaceted performer and we welcome her to this incredible ensemble of artists.”

Based on the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, Hairspray Live! takes place in 1962 Baltimore. Teenager Tracy Turnblad’s dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV program, so when she wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight and meets a colorful array of characters, including the resident dreamboat, Link; the ambitious mean girl, Amber; an African-American boy, Seaweed, in detention; and Seaweed’s mother, Motormouth Maybelle, the owner of a local record store. Tracy’s mother is the indomitable Edna Turnblad, and she eventually encourages Tracy on her campaign to integrate the all-white Corny Collins Show.

Fierstein also is writing the teleplay for the production, which hails from executive producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. The duo have been behind the past three live musical productions on NBC — The Sound of Music, Peter Pan and The Wiz, which produced impressive ratings for the network in December. Zadan and Meron will be joined by The Wiz Live! director Kenny Leon, live television director Alex Rudzinski and choreographer Jerry Mitchell (Kinky Boots).

Hairspray Live! is set to air Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 8 p.m. ET and marks the first time NBC’s live musical will be filmed in Los Angeles.

“I’ve never been more excited for anything in my entire life,” Grande added on Instagram.
