Ariana Grande performs “thank u, next” and “breathin” on The Ellen Show

On November 7th, Ariana Grande more than delivered during her elaborate Thank U, Next performance on The Ellen Show Wednesday. She also performed her 3rd single from Sweetener, breathin. She didn’t pull the idea for her fancy white setup out of the sky, though; rather, the stage, choreography and theme were inspired by a scene from the 1996 cult comedy The First Wives Club.

Starring Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton, The First Wives Club followed three divorced women out to get revenge on their husbands for leaving them for younger women. Grande’s Ellen display was drawn from the scene in which the trio broke out into “You Don’t Own Me,” which was originally sung by Lesley Gore in 1963 (and more recently popularized by Grace and G-Eazy in 2015).

Midler, Hawn and Keaton’s characters did dramatic arm-swinging dance moves while dressed in all white at a wedding reception. Grande — a longtime fan of the movie — mirrored this scene, doing her own moves beside two ladies against a set complete with flowers and cake.

During the middle of the song, Hawn jumped onto a chair at the reception — and since she almost stumbled after getting down, Billboard‘s 2018 Woman of the Year did the same.

The women in both videos concluded their musical numbers by throwing on their jackets and making the same gliding strides as they walked away.

Ariana Grande to perform at Barbara Berlanti Heroes Cancer Gala

Update: Ariana was unfortunately forced to pull out of the show just hours before due to emotional reasons. Here’s what Scooter Braun said addressing the situation.

“And you saw your invite, someone I’m very close to was supposed to come sing for you today, and because of things that she’s going through, she couldn’t be here today.”

He concluded, “And while I was frustrated, being the manager, my wife, being who she always is, just looked at me and she goes, ‘She needs this time.'”

On November 5th, nonprofit group Fuck Cancer has announced the celebrity lineup for the inaugural Barbara Berlanti Heroes Gala, which will take place at Warner Bros. Studios in Los Angeles on Oct. 13. Pop star Ariana Grande and Broadway favorite Kristin Chenoweth are set to perform at the event, as well as comedian Jeff Garlin and surprise guests.

This isn’t the first time Grande and Chenoweth are supporting a cancer-fighting cause, being that the disease has affected both their lives. Grande’s aunt and grandfather, and Chenoweth’s mother and aunts, have all experienced the damaging effects of cancer.

The organization, which endeavors to ensure patients and their families have the support they need, will use funds raised at the gala for programs created to provide resources and reduce cancer.

Ariana Grande to be featured in new Carpool Karaoke series

On January 9th, it was annoucned that Ariana Grande, is among the artists that will hitch a ride with Apple Music’s upcoming Carpool Karaoke series.

While the popular Late Late Show sketch sees host James Corden behind the wheel, the Apple Music series will feature a rotating crew of drivers.

As producers announced at the Television Critics Association press tour Monday, Legend and Keys have been paired together, while Seth McFarlane will ride around with Grande. Chelsea Handler and Blake Shelton will also carpool, Variety reports.

“I’m still going to see my kid on the weekends,” Corden said of handing off driving duties for the Apple Music series. “This just became a wonderful platform to see these people in a such an intimate environment. I don’t feel it’s mine.”

Corden, who will only serve as driver for the Will Smith episode, added, “We’re really excited about the pairings we’re putting together.”

Apple Music’s Carpool Karaoke, the first video series for the streaming service, consists of 16 half-hour episodes, with the extended format also delving into an interview instead of just singing while driving around.

“What James does is so special and singular, it was silly, as we figured out how to make a full series, to try and replicate that,” producer Ben Winston said.

Although Apple Music has the exclusive rights to the Carpool Karaoke series, Corden will continue to produce the segments for The Late Late Show. A premiere date for the series has not been announced.
